Candelária parish
Composed of the communities of Monte, Mirateca, Guindaste and Campo Raso, Candelária Parish is a picturesque settlement founded in 1632.
As there are other places which have become famous for being the birthplace of illustrious figures, Candelária Parish has the honour of being the place of origin of some nationally and internationally renowned men, where they performed their social, cultural and political work. Amongst these there is Cardinal Dom José da Costa Nunes, the first cardinal of the Azores and the patron of Madalena Secondary School, who left his will to this parish for the Franciscan Sisters of Immaculate Conception to build a pre-primary school. There is also Bishop Dom Jaime Garcia Goulart. These two men became known for their work as missionaries in the East. Also, in the community of Guindaste, the first president of the Portuguese Republic, Manuel de Arriaga, was born in the manor of the Arriaga family.
The parish church, dedicated to Our Lady of Candeias, dates back to the 18th and 19th century. Its white façade is outlined in black volcanic stone. Inside one may admire the altars averlaid with gold.
Besides the parish church, the historic and cultural heritage of Candelária is also composed of: Casa de São José – the residence of Cardinal Costa Nunes, the Chapel of Our Lady of Fatima in Campo Raso, the Arriaga Manor in Guindaste, the Chapel of São Nuno in Mirateca, the Chapel of Saint Anthony in Monte, and the Empires of the Holy Spirit.
