Criação Velha parish
Criação Velha was designated Parish in 20 November 1799. Although it was not until the 18th century that this community was officially established, it is a fact that it had been founded over two-hundred years before, as its name indicates. It is believed that one explanation for its name is the cattle rearing which existed here, as in this area there were pastures or “criações” (as they were called at the time), which were old (“velha”) due to their long existence.
Owner of one of the World’s most magnificent landscapes, the community takes pride in its basalt framework of the Pico vineyards protected landscape, which is candidate for UNESCO World Heritage.
The parish church was built in the séc. XCIII century, and has as its patron saint Our Lady of Pain. The patron saint is celebrated on 15 September or on the Sunday immediately following.
In this community one may also visit the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary beside the road of Areia Larga, the Empire of the Holy Spirit and the windmill in the middle of the Verdelho vineyards (grape variety).
