Piedade parish
Piedade is a friendly parish located on the eastern end of the Island. It was founded in 1506.
Once an important place for the "verdelho" wine produced here, the parish is today one of the Island’s most productive agricultural areas.
The parish church, dedicated to Our Lady of Compassion, dates from the 18th century.
The façade is in white stone with a basalt frame. Inside one is sure to admire the altars in gold guilt wood and the precious religious statues.
In Piedade we find the community of Manhenha, which is famous for its wines and harbours the chapel of St. Thomas and a small fishing port.
