Ribeiras parish
One of the island’s first settlements, Ribeiras, possesses a fishing port with a long tradition and experienced sailors.
This community is particularly noteworthy for its churches and chapels.
Santa Barbara church was built in 1679. As it was very small, throughout the ages it was sumitted to many changes, until it was totally demolished in 1962. In 18 July 1965, a new church was erected in modern style, without architectural exageration, yet a very sober and warm interior.
The church of the Holy Cross was built in 1680 by sailors as a small chapel to shelter the statue of the Miraculous Lord Jesus, found amongst the shore stones.
Throughout the times, the chapel underwent remodelling, until it acquired the shape of a normal church with modern interior.
Our Lady of Fatima (Pontas Negras), built in 1950, is one of the most beautiful churches on the Island. Its style of very harmonious outlines and a sober interior fascinates all who visit it.
