São Caetano parish
Founded on 2 October 1880, São Caetano is the most recent parish. It includes the communities of Prainha do Galeão, Rua de Cima and Terra do Pão.
The first settlers to arrive in the region founded this settlement in the area, today known as Prainha do Galeão. Here Garcia Gonçalves built a galleon as a form of paying his debts to king Dom João III.
As the settlers were devout of St. Caetano, priest of Vicenza, they elected him in the early years as their patron saint. Francisco Pires Flores ordered the erection of a small chapel in his honor, in the same place where currently we find a niche with the original statue of the saint.
The parish church, whose patron saint is St. Caetano, was built in the heart of the community, in the 19th century, replacing the old chapel built on the coast.
Here we also find St. Margaret’s chapel, built in the19th century in Terra do Pão, and rehabilitated in the 20th century.
Besides these two temples, the historic, cultural and natural history of the parish include the Empires of the Holy Spirit, the country houses with balconies, the cellars, the boat houses, the community centre, the tidal wells, Largo das Fontes square and Baía da Prainha do Galeão, a seaside resort.
