São João parish
São João parish is a friendly community fited between two “mysteries”. In 1718, the village was burried almost completely by volcanic eruption.
It has a small port, one of the first from where the first whalers departed.
The inhabitants of São João became famous for their delicious cheese, which bears the same name.
St. John Baptist church is from the late 18th century.
The niche of São João Pequenino, built in 1834, represents the place where the primitive parish church stood before it was destroyed by volcanic lava in 1718. This niche is located on the right side of the regional road, on the border of São João, direction Lages-Madalena.
